Over the past few months, Sonu Sood has helped thousands of migrant labourers, stuck in various parts of the country, reach their homes. Before Ganesh Utsav, he had also sent migrant labourers from the city to their villages in remote areas of Maharashtra and Konkan, so that they could be with their families during the festival. Now, another important issue has caught his attention. While most educational institutions have started online classes, there are a large number of underprivileged students, who don’t have the money to pay their fees, or the resources to attend online classes.
Moved by their plight, Sonu has launched a scholarship programme in his late mother’s name, which will provide aid to bright, underprivileged students for higher education. He shares, “During the past few months, I have seen how the underprivileged struggled to pay for their children’s education. While some did not have phones to attend online classes, others did not have money to pay the fees. So, I have tied up with universities across the country to offer scholarships under the name of my mother, Professor Saroj Sood. She used to teach in Moga (Punjab), free of cost. She had told me to take her work ahead, and I feel that this is the right time.
