The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) had last week issued orders to 14 municipal corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), to hold the reservation lottery on May 31, without OBC seats.While the ward reservation lottery will be held on May 31, the Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation will publish a draft ward reservation list on June 1. Following this, citizens and activists will get time till June 6 to submit their suggestions and objections to the ward reservation. The final ward reservation list will be published in the gazette on June 13.

The lottery for ward reservations for the upcoming BMC elections will be held at the Rangsharda Auditorium, Bandra on Tuesday. The State Election Commission (SEC) directed BMC to begin the process of corporation election following the Supreme Court order. The SEC has already accepted the draft of electoral ward boundaries demarcation. The total electoral wards have been increased to 236 from 227. Only the proceedure of reservation of ward was left, which will be held on Tuesday.

It is considered as one of the important procedures from the candidate’s point of view, which would clear the picture as to which of the 236 wards are reserved for women, Scheduled Caste, and Schedule Tribe candidates. The lottery will decide the wards reserved SC-ST women candidates.

Tuesday’s lottery procedure will decide the fate of aspiring as well as existing candidates. A number of candidates were seen nervour with keeping their fingers crossed.Many sitting corporators have spent a huge amount on various projects in their constituency to secure their ward but will their wards’ status will be retained or will it fall in any reserved category will be decided only on Tuesday.

In 2017, when the last lottery process was conducted, it had crashed dreams of a number of aspirants. Sandip Deshpande, the then corporator of MNS, had to leave his seat for a woman candidate. Similarly, Yashodhar Phanse, standing committee chairman from 2012-2017 also had to leave his seat for a woman candidate. Best chairman Arun Dudhwadkar, too, had to leave his ward for a woman candidate.

Of the total 236 wards, 118 wards will be reserved for women candidates, 15 for the backward class. Among them, eight wards will be reserved for SC women candidates and two for ST candidates. The remaining 219 electoral wards will be for open candidates among them 109 wards will be for women. Draft of ward reservation will be published on June 1. Thereafter, suggestions and objections will be called till June 6. Citizens can submit their suggestions and objections at 24 administrative wards of BMC. The final draft would be submitted to the SEC on June 13.

BMC Reservation lottery Result

In February, the BMC, then controlled by the Shiv Sena, conducted the delimitation exercise and increased the number of electoral wards from 227 to 236 and changed the ward boundaries. According to officials from BMC’s Election Department, the boundaries of 90 electoral wards have been changed. The lottery for the reservation for the new nine wards will also be held on Tuesday.

Of the 236 wards, 50 per cent, or, 118, are reserved for women, of which 109 are reserved for women in the general category, eight for SC and one for ST women candidates.

Of the nine new wards, three each are in the island city, its western suburb, and the eastern suburb. As per the civic body’s document, in the city, the E ward (Byculla, Madanpura), F-south (Parel, Seweree), and G-south (Worli, Mahalaxmi) have a new ward each.

In the western suburb, one ward each has been added to R-north (Dahisar), R-south (Kandivali), and K-east (Andheri, Jogeshwari) while in the eastern suburb, L ward (Kurla), N ward (Ghatkopar, Vikhroli), and M-west (Chembur, Mahul) each have got a new ward. BMC officials said the new electoral wards were prepared as per the population ratio.

As per the order of the State Election Commission, Mumbai Municipal Corporation has announced to drop the reservation for the upcoming elections. The event was held at Rangsharda Hall, Mumbai. The list of reserved and unreserved wards was announced by the municipality. Ward No. 27.5595, 98, 111. 121, 124, 126, 129, 137, 145, 146, 147, 150, 151, 152, 154, 155, 156, 159. 160, 175, 179, 187, 189, 192, 195, 202, 203, 206, 207, 218, 224 and 234 were reserved for the Scheduled Castes in the 2007, 2012 and 2017 elections. They are now excluded. Wards 60, 85, 107, 119.139, 153, 157, 162, 165, 190, 194, 204, 208, 215 and 221 are reserved for Scheduled Castes. Out of these wards, in the elections of 2007, 2012 and 2017, as no ward is reserved for SC women, 8 out of the 15 wards will be selected by lot for women. Women general, excluding OBC reservation,

In Mumbai, the number of wards has increased by nine from 237 to 236 this year. A system has been set up in 24 wards of Mumbai to register objections and suggestions on reservation. Citizens will be able to submit their suggestions to this office till June 6. The final reservation will be released in the Gazette on June 13.

Wards 139, 190, 194, 165, 107, 85, 119, 204 have been reserved for SC women groups. The existing male councilors in this ward will have to find another option.
